MMIE #379 - a Fort Worth success story
  February 10, 2011

  Hello -

How do you go from zero to $5 million in sales in 8 short years . . . and own your own building in the meantime . . . ?

It's been a wild and crazy ride for Fort Worth Camera but owner Jeff Masure reveals how his future will be much "more organized and we'll be that much more of a ferocious team." You'll hear how Jeff's learning through trial and error didn't work for him. Discover what launched Fort Worth Camera to grow and prosper while similar businesses stagnated and withered during the same time period. Jeff has a unique outlook on life and business, a fantastic team he's built and a loyal customer base. Listen in (or read the transcript which includes pictures) so you can be inspired and find ideas to make your business grow and prosper.

That's on the newest DIMAcast,

Here's a direct link to the DIMAcast.

Better still, download the PDF and you can see the photos of Jeff's operation.

Idea # 1 - Making the best of a snowy day

Michael St Germain - Concord Camera Store - Concord, NH USA - web site

With more snow in the forecast, our forecast at the store was zero customers, zero business, zero dollars in the till. I quickly put together an email campaign offering discounts for ordering based upon the official depth of snow recorded.

Thirty customers took advantage of the 11¢ off, with a total of 1546 4x6 prints.

A lot of money? No. More than we would have had without the mailing? Yes.

We'll do it again and with the weather forecast plan a couple days ahead and send out several email blasts with a build up to the great storm savings.

Idea # 2 - Future Proof Your Customers' Images . . .

David Guidry, Lakeside Camera and Photoworks, Metairie, LA, USA website

Whether you're doing shoebox scans or back up CD/DVD off your kiosk there is the nagging feeling that in a short period of time the media you put the images on won't be readable.

Certainly prints will always be able to be enjoyed by customers.

Just think, what would have happened if images were stored on reel to reel tape, 8 track tape, floppy disks, etc.

If your customer has their video on Betamax, can they see it today? VHS has almost disappeared. How much longer will CD or DVD be around?

Lakeside now offers customers the opportunity to have their images "Future Proofed" by returning their scans and files on an external hard drive. The images could be downloaded onto any computer in the future and the images retrieved and/or used to share the family memories.

We buy the hard drive from local supplier and include it in the cost of the project, not as an individual line item. We're not in it for the profit (or lack thereof) on the hard drive. We're doing it to be sure our customers images are accessible for generations to come. Our customers know we care and are serious about image protection.

Idea # 3 - The details behind Bedford's phone image harvesting

Editor's note: Last week's MMIE submission from Bedford's (archived copy) brought a lot of reader inquiries - in particular "how do you do it?"

Not inquiries about the promotion but about the work flow. So here's the follow up:

Jeff Beauchamp - Bedford's Camera and Video - Fort Smith, AR, USA - website

Our Fort Smith store manager has put together a file to guide you, but there are thousands of Internet links that may also guide you. We see all types of phones, but the iPhone is most common. Each requires a little different method, perhaps at first only promote the service for I phones! U will be surprised how many need this service and do not know where to go! Let me know if we can further assist you,

Jeff Beauchamp, Bedford Camera & Video

Downloading images from phone to a computer:

After connecting with the phone's usb cable, open "my computer" ("computer" on Windows Vista). You should see a drive labeled "Apple iPhone" or something similar. Double click on that icon, which will open to show you another folder. Keep double clicking on succeeding folders until you see the pictures on the phone.

What I do is make a new folder on the desktop, then select the photo(s) to be downloaded. Then, click and drag to that folder on the desktop. Disconnect the phone. Done!

Sounds simple, but... :)
